Windows Phone 7

Big news for the mobile industry as mega-company Microsoft starts their press conference on Windows Phone 7. It is believed the company will show hardware from companies such as HTC, Samsung and LG. There are reports that details of the phones have already been leaked on the Windows Phone 7 website.
The new operating system has already been shown off earlier this year to a positive reception from the technology industry. Microsoft is hoping for their operating system to become the next big thing, overtaking the current top operating systems Android and iOS.

Top 10 Non-game Apps

Hey
I have finished my iPhone 4 review and it is sitting on my computer so i'll upload it tonight:) In the meantime, here is my top 12 non-game iOS apps. It was going to be 10 but then I could not decide. All of these apps are free by the way, or at least have free version.

1. Currency - this app might not interest everyone but it provides a simple, easy to use overview of any currency in the world.

2. Facebook - once again, not for everybody but come on. Who under 80 does not have Facebook.

3. Flashlight (icon below)- even if you don't have an iPhone 4, this app can be very useful. Flashlight allows you to use the flash as a torch or a strobe light. It also lets you turn the screen white like many other apps. If you do not have an iPhone 4 I recommend an app called flashlight (its icon has a green background with a torch on it) which allows you to turn the screen any colour. Turning it white illuminates anything.

4. TweetDeck - if you use twitter, you will live this app. It provides an excellent column view as well as a great interface for writing tweets and even connecting to Facebook.

5. Foxtel Guide - This is useless for you if you do not have Foxtel but if you do it is a must. It lets you record from anywhere in the world. If you have two boxes through multiroom you can even select which one to record on. Although this is only for Australia, i'm pretty sure cable networks in other countries have apps similar to this one including TiVo.

6. Authenticator - Only useful if you play World of Warcraft but if you do, it lets you use your phone as a Remote Authenticator, which prevents hacking.

7. USB Disk - This allows you to do what you can't with an iPhone of any kind, use it an a USB like you can with iPods...sort of. It only works if you have iTunes on both computers, but you can load any file on to it through iTunes, view it on your iPhone, then offload it on another computer.

8. Remote - This Apple application, not pre-installed simply allows control of your iTunes library from anywhere in your house, as long as you have iTunes.

9. PandoraBox - Its a bit complicated to use, but if you can it is great, and could save you a lot on money. It shows free apps that are free for a limited amount of time. Just go On Sale(down the bottom) then click free(up the top).

10. Consume - this app can be a tad buggy at times but it shows data usage and call usage for many networks.

11. Snow Report - useless if you are not interested in skiing but if you are it provides unprecedented coverage of slopes all over the world.

12. Sound Hound - this app lets you identify not only recorded songs, but also that one stuck in your head when you sing it. Its free version lets you identify only a couple of songs per month but for most people, this is enough.

A friend also told me to mention Eurosport and iFittness, which will cater for all your sports news and workout plans respectively.

So till next time

Top 10 Game Apps

Soooo.....this is awkward......Well I may not have posted in about a month but oh well. I have an iPhone 4 review coming very soon. Oh well to get psyched up for the iPhone 4 AWESOMENESS!! I will give you my top 10....well 11 because I miscounted at first... favourite and most used apps.

I currently have 156 applications to search through so to narrow down, I will give you TWO lists, one of games and one of ....well everything else.

1. Tilt to live - I am sure most of you have heard of this awesome game. You tilt. you live ...OR DIEEEEEEE
2. Dactyl 2 - Now this is one of my favorites mainly because I can do it. High score of 160 on extreme mode of the first game:)
3. Fruit Ninja - This game was not only was developed in my home town, but also have made over 2 million dollars. The squishy sound cutting the fruit makes is delightful
4. Guitar Hero - This alternative to many other iPhone rhythm games is fast, fun and much more creative than the others
5.  You Vs Wall - This interactive version of the famous Japanese game show may be very short, but is also very fun:)
6. Peggle - This game will hook you. It is very very addictive
7. Doodle Jump - As well as providing the basis for many lame jokes (Can I jump your doodle *snigger*) it is also fun and addictive
8. Lightsaber - Now I'm not really sure if this is counted as a game but oh well. This spin-off of sorts from "Star wars: The force unleashed" an awesome glowing lightsaber....WITH MUSIC!!! Wave it around and see what happens:)
9. Line Rider - Originally a flash game, this open world ....track editor...sort of is awesome fun. You will let out a creative/ sadistic side you never new you had:)
10. Cubes Light - This game may seem simple and not particularly original, but it is a really fun way to spend an otherwise very boring public transport journey.
11. Blip Solitaire - Now this game is incredibly simple. But like Cubes Light, is a really fun way to spend an otherwise boring journeyThanksAndrewCow

Best Game Trailers Ever

Hi
So the other day, I was watching a couple of awesome game trailers. It got me thinking, what are the best I have ever seen? These are my top 5, not in order though. Leave your favourites in the comments below :)

The first, although technically not a trailer, was released before the game was and therefore counts as one...to me:)

Well....here are the others

I saw this one just earlier today... and what can I say. It looks utterly amazing!

I thought I would add this one. The funniest game trailer I have ever seen!:)

Thanks everyone

Security

Hi
If you didn't know, some people are scary. I am not trying to spook you out of the Internet or buying things online, I do it all the time. Just be careful.

So about a month ago, there was the world security conference where lots of people display scary life destroying technology. Luckily, there are all expert defenders of the innocent, just creating proof of concept things to keep people on guard. There were many terrifying devices, but none more than, well basically a mini cell phone tower. It takes the cell phone signal that would normally be beamed directly to your phone, and magnifies it. Now that does not sound so bad, even useful. The scary thing is, it tricks your phone to connect to it, no matter what...then steals all your data and information. This is done using a combination of a signal blocker and the crazy signal amplifier/ information stealer the guy invented.

So what sort of information can this thing steal about you. Well firstly, details of your account with the telco provider you have. This may even allow them to access your credit card. After that, basically anything on your phone, maybe more depending on how you use your phone.

So yea..........the tech world is a scary place
See you next time

White iPhone

Hey
So you may wonder what ever happened to the white iPhone 4. There are pictures of it sitting there in all its awesomeness on the apple website, but when you go and order it, you get a message like the one shown below. Now Apple has been very quiet about this but the never ending leaks on the product continue. Maybe Apple should use the money the gained from firing their head of engineering over the "Antennagate" scandal to hire a plumber.

Apparently (i have noticed I am starting to use this word a lot) they are finding it very hard to stop the screen's back light shining through the front panel of the phone. You may not really get what I mean but if you have ever seen a MacBook, you would. In the laptop's case, Apple utilizes the back light as not only a....well....back light, but also to light the Apple logo on the reverse side of the screen. In the case of the iPhone 4, this would cause the phone to glow like a Christmas tree.

The interesting thing about this reason is that functional white iPhone 4s do exist. Apple some employees have been given them. Most likely, these are hand made devices built at the headquarters in California. In silicone valley, not suicide valley(if you did not get that joke, the company that makes the iPhone, Foxconn, has had 13 suicide attempts in five months). But I digress with my tasteless jokes. Basically, there must be some way to make the phones not bleed light, because Apple is doing it. I'm guessing though there is something expensive about it that is not feasible in mass production.

Another theory states, this delay is just so they have time to re-engineer the antenna. Apple has really not had luck with this product launch. Not only was there is delay in white iPhone, but also reported problems with a batch of phones proximity sensor(the thing that makes the screen turn off when it is close to your face) as well as the terrible lagging experienced by users of iOS4 on the original 3G...like me....

In any case, I will have my iPhone 4 soon and then be happy. I have already ordered some really cool cases and I recommend you check them out HERE. They are truly amazing unique things.

Thanks for reading:)

The Truth About the Bermuda Triangle

    Hi
This may not really be tech news as such but I like it. Apparently, crazy people who believe the Bermuda triangle is earth's hub of alien activity have finally been proven wrong. Although the proven theory has been around for a very long time, it was proven some time earlier in the year.

The theory is that methane bubbles, well...bubbling up from the earths core, change the structure of the water. This basically lowers the density so significantly, ships just sink in an instant like the water disappeared from underneath them. Now, you might be saying, what about planes. They crash and don't exactly swim. Well, this is the kicker of the story that, basically makes it one of the only viable solutions. These bubbles can float out of the water. Like the ships, this then changes the density of the air around the wings, reducing these airborne sardine tins to 600 tonne balloons.

There is still some queries, such as boats that appeared with no people on them. Well.....they are some of the most pirate ridden waters in the world. I think any smart, sensible captain hook lookalike would find it neat to be able to kill and rob a boats rich crew, and blame it all on the aliens. Or is it more appropriate in our current political climate to call them EVIL UFO PEOPLE(any non-Australian readers...yea just go ahead and ignore that joke). You never know though. I could be wrong. Maybe the worlds alien hub is not Texas and New Mexico and Arizona.

Whatever happens, i'm sure the stories will never stop. Oh by the way. Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not saying there are not aliens, just that they would have no interest to visit this soon to be inter-space by-pass:)
    Thanks for reading guys

MobileMe is useless - Part 2

    Hi

So the other day I posted on how you can sync all your calendars, contacts and emails between your iPhone. Today I will tell you how to get other MobileMe features including Find My iPhone, bookmark syncing, online storage and online photo albums. Now all this may seem like it would be easier to have all in one place but once you get to using it, it is very simple.

    Find My iPhone
This feature allows you to find your phone anywhere in the world via GPS. It displays your information on an online map, allowing you to find it if it has been stolen. Another thing it allows you to do is send a message to your phone and make it ring, even if it is on silent mode.

There are numerous apps that let you do this. One I found is called FoneHome. It allows you to find your phone online and send messages to it in the exact same way MobileMe does. Although it does not let you send that sound, for $2.50, it is much cheaper than over $100. This is also the only part of my MobileMe guide you have to pay for. I recommend you keep it running in the multitasking background otherwise its a bit pointless

    Bookmark Syncing
Now there are a couple of ways to do this. The first one is to do it when you sync. This, however, is not always the most convenient. The easiest one would be to use an app called Firefox Home. It allows users to not only view Firefox bookmarks but also see the tabs you have open. The feature in Firefox also allows users to sync their bookmarks and tabs between computers.

    Online Storage
One major part of MobileMe is its easy online storage. Now, although this is done well. I have found somewhere that does it much much better, and for free. It is called Dropbox and off the bat gives you 2GB of online storage but very easily, can get you up to 8GB. Now this is all for free and I just love it. It puts a folder on your desktop for easy drag and drop access for PCs, Macs, AND iPhone :) Click here for an account. I highly recommend it: )

    Online Photo Albums
This is a little bit of a strange feature but I thought I would cover it anyway. There are millions of ways to do this for free. Whether you use Photobucket, Flickr, image shack or even Facebook, they all would great. If you want something more in-dept with more features, Picassa by Google is great. It has an iPhone specific web app that is great.

So thats about it. MobileMe is useless.

    iPhone 4 Haters Are Idiots

    Hi,

I was not planning on posting today but I was having a conversation with my parents that got me very angry. They were saying how they had read numerous articles bashing the iPhone 4's antenna issues and would never buy one now. I am sure there is no need for me to tell you how incredibly awesome the iPhone 4 is, so I am going to focus on the antenna issue.

This may come as a shock to some of you, but firstly: EVERY CELL PHONE EVER MADE HAS A DEATH SPOT. That is, a place where, when you touch it, the signal drops significantly. For my iPhone 3G, it is the bottom right-hand corner - meaning when I hold it, the signal drops in the EXACT SAME WAY THE iPHONE 4 DOES. So this issue really is widely spread. Why is everyone making such a big deal over this? One reason - the spot is marked. People can see directly where the spot is and therefore make a big deal out of it. It is ridiculous.

So, although there is no actual problem with the world's greatest phone, Apple has provided 2 fixes. Firstly, they fixed a software issue whereby the bars were displayed incorrectly. Secondly, Apple is providing a free case to everyone who bought the phone. Not just the Bumper because they said they can't create 3 million of them. They are providing a selection cases from other companies as well. What can I say. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

So there you have it. The iPhone 4 has no problems. I am definitely going to buy it. On that subject, it has been confirmed to be coming out on the 30th of July.

I hope the media did not throw your mind.

MobileMe is useless - Part 1

    Hi
Many of you may know of Apple's MobileMe service. It has many features such as bookmark syncing, calendar syncing, online space and finding your lost iPhone. Now a MobileMe subscription costs around AU$119. It is completely ridiculous as I have found a way to easily get almost every feature for free and the few that cost, very cheaply.

    iPhone Syncing

This feature is very easy. The first step is to make a Gmail account.

    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Add Account...>Microsoft Exchange
Then just plug in your email address and password. Your can ignore the domain. On the next screen, input the following settings:

    Server: m.google.com
    Domain: Leave this blank
    Username: your email address

Then ensure Mail, Contacts and Calendars are on. When you press Done, press Keep on my iPhone. This should sync all your contacts, emails and calander information to your iPhone. If it does not work, feel free to email me at ravingsoftechnogeek@gmail.com. Lastly, in your Gmail, go into settings and then to Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Go down to "2. When messages are accessed with POP" and set it to "keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox".

I will continue Mac syncing, Windows syncing and Find my iPhone in the next few posts.

    Office 2010

Well I said I would do this review well over two months ago but finally here it is. Office 2010 was released the other day without anyone really noticing. I had already made this video before it was released but I had some encoding troubles. The clicking sounds are because I had the wrong setting on the screen recorder program and it was supposed to be in HD but something went wrong there as well. Oh well. The actual programs are wonderful - it is the best version of Office by a mile.

    Enjoy

    Vuvuzela

    Hi

I just had to post about this today because it is very funny and I did not know how long it would stay.

Do you find something missing from your YouTube videos, something you have been hearing so much lately to live without it is a terrifying. Well, I'm sure most of you do not but oh well. YouTube has put a button in their player that allows you to play the joyful sound of the Vuvuzela behind, or more so on top of your videos. This feature is not in all videos, but here is an example. Now your life can be filled with annoying buzzing all day long:)

    iOS4

    Hi
So iOS4 was released a couple of days ago and the new iPhone 4 is due to be released in less than 24 hours. Now I have installed in on my iPhone 3G and had a play with it on my friends 3Gs. The first thing that comes to mind is how stupidly difficult it is to install. Now I know come people were fine and had it installed straight away but I had many issues installing it. Firstly, my phone had to go through a three hour backup before installing even though I had just backed it up 3 minutes before hand? There was no way to stop this and the disappointments
just kept on coming. After around 4 hours of installing, I finally got to the sync stage. This is where the major stuff up occurred.

So it tried to restore it to the 3 hour long backup and just couldn't. Error message after error message spewed out at me until I finally tried to sync it without restoring my original settings whereby my iPhone decided to think it did not have a SIM card. I took out and replaced the SIM card about 5 times and my phone decided it had a SIM card but the computer it was connected to decided to completely ignore it and refuse to Sync. So I took it over to a different computer which made my iPhone very angry and phone decided it did not have a SIM card after all. By the way I think I should mention at this point iOS4 still has not been installed. It was demanding I reconnect it to iTunes and do it again. So back to the other computer (which was a Mac which probably helped), I took out the SIM card once more and low and behold it actually decides to recognize it. So I managed to install iOS4 in the phone on that computer and then Sync it with my other computer finally.

So now I have it there are some things I am happy and sad about. Well actually many things I am sad about. Apple said there were a few features it had to leave out of the 3G version. I think my a few they mean almost every one. It does not support multitasking (which I already knew) , home screen wallpapers, accessibility options or screen orientation lock. I was so excited when they announced orientation lock as I have wanted it ever since I got my phone but nope:(.

Oh well. There were some things I did like such as iBooks, Spell Check(very useful for me), and Folders. iBooks is a very nice app but a very slow. When you eventually get to one of the many free books, the reading experience is very nice when put in low brightness and Sepia mode, which makes the background brown instead of white. It often will not connect to the iBooks store for no particular reason but that hopefully will be fixed soon. Spell Check is useful bit a bit hard to use at first. I eventually got use to it but the many combinations of tapping used for select, copy, paste and replace make using feature a challenge. Folders are very easy to use as all you need to do is drag one app on top of the other and you have it but with my 130 apps the fact you can only have 12 per folder is annoying.

Now most of these features worked far better on the 3GS I used but the owner complained about the annoyance of having to stop your apps as they all go into the Multitasking menu. The system Apple implemented for stopping these apps is slow and unnatural. They make you hold to app down for a couple of seconds before closing them which can get frustrating if there are 12 apps open. The switching between these apps is seamless though and very fast.

So it is probably he fact this OS was not really made for the 3G that frustrates me so but the upgrade is mostly excellent on the 3GS.

    Thanks for reading
    AndrewCow

p.s. I actually have made the Office 2010 review and seeing the retail version was released with out anyone noticing I will post that tomorrow but be warned it is not very good.

New Tech of E3 and Apple!!!

    Hi

Well the first day of E3, the internationally renown gaming expo, has been full of major releases and announcements. Not all of these have come from E3 however - Apple, being the company they are, could never have a day of major announcements without one of their own. Not only did iPhone 4 pre-ordering start for countries were the device will be released on the 24th, the company released an update to the Mac Mini. The ultra small computer not only has a uni-body shell similar to the MacBook Pro, but also HDMI output and a SD card slot. I really like this upgrade as I have always wanted one - but not even more as Apple is exhausting its abilities as a media center device.

Microsoft finally fully unveiled their "Project Natal" device, dubbed the Kinect. This XBOX 360 add-on allows you to control games with motions, but unlike the Wii, it does not require a controller. This seems like another face palm for me. This device seems strikingly similar to the old EyeToy for the PS2 or Playstation Eye for PS3. The XBOX even had a version of these called XBOX live vision. All three devices sort of.....well...failed miserably. I seriously do not know why Microsoft thinks a better version of this 1999 technology will sell. There will be tonnes of people buying it in the beginning, but only because of media. Well at least that is what I think.

This device should be released in the US in November and has no price yet.

A motion sensor device for the PS3 is also in the works, although it uses a rather suggestive looking controller(the bottom pic). The Wii is a pretty awesome console and for so cheap its great but by the looks of it, Sony and Microsoft are trying to annihilate it.

Lastly....NEW XBOX !!!!! No, it is not the ridiculously named XBOX 720, it is still called the XBOX 360. The thinner version of the 360 has had a visual redesign as well as included Wifi (such a new concept). Personally I think too little (hardware wise) too late and.....it's sorta ugly....

It will be sold for $500 from July 1 in Australia.

    Till next time :)

    BAD GOOGLE

Oh come on Google, you can be better than that. If you don't know what I am referring to, just go to Google's homepage. Notice anything different? No, you have not accidentally gone to Bing, Google has just straight out copied them.

As many of you know, there are only 3 reasons people use Microsoft's Bing.

    1. It is default in Internet Explorer
    2. They do not like Google just on principal
    3. It has pretty pictures

Earlier this week, Google took away their plain white site background and replaced it with some cool nature pics. There is no way to deny that Google copied them. That is just not how you do things - come on, you have so much original software but you just go and copy other people. You have no idea how disappointed I am with you.

    iPhone 4

Ravings of a Technogeek - every Monday, Wednesday and Friday......usually....except for 2 weeks when I am incredibly busy. I thought I should probably post about about the sexiest thing ever to come to the earth. I have included a photo of the past sexiest thing on the planet (Megan Fox) for comparison.

So, you have probably guessed, at 3am this morning, Apple started their press conference and released their latest iPhone - the iPhone 4. It turns out this was exactly the phone that was leaked, except this one seems really really really pretty. So apart from changing the looks, there are over 100 changes on the inside. I don't know all of them for sure, but Steve went through the main ones.

Firstly, it has the A4 chip, like the one in the iPad. This makes it very very very fast. They also managed to shrink everything so they could grow the battery. I'm very happy about this. I never really had a problem with my 3G's battery but .....faster.....longer battery ...what could be bad???

Another thing displayed and I think is AWESOME is the 4's ability to record 720p HD video. With its new 5mp camera it can take excellent pictures and its LED Flash (which can stay on while videoing), those pictures can be taken in the dark. Now you might think, as I did at first 'pfffft 5mp, thats nothing' well Apple has dished out some of their trademark jargon to convince us that 5mp is plenty. For once, it actually makes sense. You see.....I don't really understand it. It is something to do with the number of photons in each pixel...which sounds right... OH WELL :)

One of the reasons the iPhone 4 looks so brilliant is because of its display. Apple has implemented something called Retina Display Technology. What this means (I think) that, although the screen is only 640p, it has much smaller pixels. Text, photos, basically any curved lines are now much much smoother because there are more pixels making them up. I hope that whole bit actually made sense.

I could ramble on for hours about the 4's dual mics for noise cancellation, or the iMovie application making 720p movie editing being just one tap away, but I do not want to. There are, however, three more things I would like to focus on.

Firstly, Apple is trying to make a case, and it actually looks pretty good. It can be seen below and it is called the "Bumper". This is because it is more like a silicone, well...bumper bar, that fits around the aluminium edge of the phone, leaving the glass back and front exposed. You might be thinking. 'Great. Now I have two places to shatter my phone' but you would be wrong. Firstly, Apple has developed a glass that is apparently, stronger than plastic and sapphires. Secondly, the "Bumper" extends from the phone, like a regular case, meaning if you drop it, the case will hit the ground first.

Very quickly, it now has a gyroscope. This means it can sense movement as you turn, jump or be doing similar things to the accelerometer, but on more scales.

Lastly, the front facing camera wound have no point without video calling. FaceTime is a service built into the phone application that allows for excellent quality video calls. Unfortunately though, only between the iPhone 4s and, for the mean time, only over WiFi. This is quite surprising to me that they did not integrate iChat and allow it to talk to computers. I'm almost positive though Skype will be able to call to computers, be it a Mac  or PC. What they are doing however, is attempting to make their way of doing video calling (e.g. codecs) universal, which means, someday, you might be able to call between iPhone 4s and HTC phones, or Nokias.

So there is much more I could say, but I will let the professionals say it for me. For way, way, way more information and videos, go HERE. This phone should be available in the US on June 24th, along with the renamed iOS 4 on June 21, free to all devices excluding the original iPhone and the 1st gen touch. The phone should be available in Australia some time in July. I will definitely be getting one and I will do a full review of it then.

    Till next time,
    AndrewCow

P.S. the Word 2010 video should be up this weekend:)

    iPad Envy

    Hi

There is a delay on the Microsoft 2010 review because I keep recording the video and stupid Camtasia comes up with brand new errors for me:(

Instead I will recap my thoughts on the iPad, seeing it came out today internationally. Firstly, I would like to tell you a story. I was coming home on the train today, just like a nice little non-car using person, and what do I see but my first iPad......well not exactly. It was in its box...in a JB Hi-Fi bag, seeing it was just bought, but oh well, it is the closest I have ever been. As I surreptitiously subtly peered over the crowd in an attempt to confirm my suspicion that the box in the bag had the magical little silver apple, a feeling of complete envy overtook me. It was all I could do to stop myself from snatching the bag from her blotchy little hand and running. I had been had. At that moment, I realised with dispair Apple had infected me. It was an iPad but why was I so eager to have it. I have an iPhone. An iPad is just that crossed with a kindle.

I'm actually having to think about this very hard. Why do I want an iPad? Well firstly, I'm a geek - so for show. That is the main reason. I have said this once before and I will say it again - Steve Jobs is anal. All Apple products must be perfect (in his eyes at least). I think these crazy tendencies are a major part of what appeals to me. This sounds very strange but all Apple products are so soft, yet hard and sturdy, so clean, yet useful and fun. Although other products may be able to do so much more, such as the HP Slate(which may or may not be cancelled and may or may not be called the HP Hurricane), no other product can inspire that morale abolishing WANT that an Apple product can. The hunger for the cool aluminium and glass to be under my fingers. Paying any price, however many thousands of dollars it is only an act an Apple product can push upon me, and much of the rest of the world.

My final thoughts - Apple's combination of hardware, software; interface and design; materials and infrastructure elevates them above any other company when it comes to passion. That is really what it comes down to. Although an Apple product may not do everything, what it can do it does it magnificently and like not any other device conceivable. Even the haters can appreciate how the iPad is really the pinnacle of this. The pinnacle of Apple passion. Sure, I might not, but the first edition or even second but like all Apple products we can make do.

    We can wait.

Reading this whole thing back to myself, it does not seem to make much sense. After all this, is the RAVINGS of a Technogeek. Because of this, I will summarise it:

I love all Apple products. Although they are not always the most technically advanced in their range, they exude passion and care. I guess that something resides somewhere in all of us and that is why we buy their products in numbers like no other.

Steve Jobs really summed up the words excitement when he launched the iPad back in January. He quoted an article from The Times if I remember correctly. It said "The last time people were so exited about a tablet, it had commandments written on it". In a way it does. After all it is an eBook reader :)

Thanks for holding on till the end :) A review of Word 2010 should by up by Monday.

PACMAN!! It was it's 30th year anniversary the other day so to celebrate, google being the awesome comapny they are, made their logo not just a pacman dedicated version of google like other holidays, but a WORKING VERSION OF PACMAN in the shape of the google logo. For those of you who missed the 48 hour window where you could play the game, it will still live on at the addresshttp://www.google.com/pacman/

Go there and you can play like it was the 1980s all over again:) Also, the "I'm feeling lucky" button has been replaced by an "Insert Coin" button which allows you to play with Mrs Pac Man in two player mode using WASD and the arrows.

I hope you have had fun and a video review of Office 2010(that's right 2010) will be up soon:)

Another New iPhone 4G...Im not so sure

Ok. This one is a little weird. This story is a couple of weeks old this but I have been busy.
The story is that a Vietnamese man found another iPhone 4G. It looks the same as the one leaked by Gizmodo except it was partially active with some strange looking console (text sort of thing. I will not go into the details. Sort of like command prompt or CMD in windows) screen with the word "Inferno" up the top in big green letters.

Well the first thing that strikes me about this is at least the OS is fake. I'm not sure how it was done but Apple could never have designed it. My reasoning is that IT LOOKS UGLY. Apple would never design something that was green with red flames, even if it was a prototype. My guess is that this guy either stole one from the assembly line or that it is an actual Apple leak. Why I think it might be an Apple leak it that they are not going after it at all. This might be because the whole international thing can make legal proceedings very tricky but COME ON, Apple has some of the best lawyers in the world. They might not be pursuing it because they were the ones that put it out there or maybe because they can't be bothered. They figure the world has already seen it and CBF. I'm really not sure to be honest.

What has been almost confirmed though is that it has one of the new A4 chips. A 1GB iPhone...THAT'S CRAZY FAST. It might have less power. I don't really know. Only part of the serial number was the same as the iPad chips so who knows. This whole story is sooooo weird I don't think anyone really knows what to make of it, including me.

If you want any more information there is tonnes at  Gizmodo or cnet. Here is the specific Vietnam iPhone post

    Steam for Mac

    Hi
Just a very quick update. Some time last week(I think), steam for Mac was released. This means tonnes of your favorite Steam games are now available for Mac. This will change the way Macs are marketed I think. They were always marketed as multimedia PCs. Now, they can do games as well. They are almost as good as Windows........sorta....still far behind but catching up.

Well to celebrate this, Steam is offering Portal, the game we all know and love, for free download until May 24. That is next Monday. So get in quickly and get your free copy of the greatest game ever created.

    Till next time

    UPDATE - HP SLATE

    Hi
I haven't been posting because I have been ridiculously busy but I should start regularly again soon. Ok. A while ago there were rumors about the HP slate, saying due to unforeseen problems with Windows 7, the slate project has been permanently cancelled. I didn't post on this at the time because I was in so much denial I just could not accept it. Then more news came out saying HP had bought Palm, a company we do not hear much of here in the land of Aus. If you didn't know they make phones, and along with those phones, mobile operating systems. This has caused much questioning over whether the HP slate will, a, ever be released, and b, if it is released, will it run a full version of Windows 7 or a mystical new mobile OS.

I will give my opinion on both of those matters. A - Will the HP slate ever be released. I think it most definitely will be in some from or another. They have so much support from all the Apple haters out there, they would sell millions.

B- Will it run a full version of Windows 7. I'm not too sure about this one. I think it will still run at leased a version of Windows 7. Maybe a highly edited edition of it. I think that is maybe where the mobile OS company comes in. Seriously though. I have no idea. And about the mobile OS company, I think they bought that just to get a step up into the mobile business.

I just thought since you guys seemed to like my previous HP Slate post, I would update you.
I will leave you on an unrelated note. This video is just plain out awesome:)
    Thanks for reading

    Blu-ray

    Hi
Lol. I have not posted in ages but oh well. Ok so Blu-ray. This comes up because I am about to watch the Avatar blu-ray on my 1080p TV. Just a side note, 1080 is the number of pixels going down the side of the screen and p means the pixels all appear at once apposed to i, where the odd lines of pixels appear 1/30 of a second, that is 0.033, before the even lines, making p better......where was I..... OH YES. 1080p TVs and Blu-ray.

Now some people say there is no point in blu-ray. They say 1080p makes no difference. They are crazy. Ok. Now I couldn't be bothered to make my own comparison video but the maker of the Microwave Show(Is it a good idea to microwave this?) made a very good one already. Now watch the whole thing if you like, but what you should watch is around 2:05 in this video here(MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT IN 1080p). It shows the difference side by side of high definition and standard  definition footage and cameras.

So, it's just plain false the difference between HD and SD footage and therefore DVD and Blu-ray is unrecognizable. What some people say then however is, "I see the difference, but don't care. Why should I switch to something so much more expensive. Firstly, the cost. It will go down in 1 year and be the same price as normal DVDs. The same thing happened with DVDs and videos. Secondly, just imagine Avatar in all its HD brilliance......now imagine it in the grainy colour that was video.......it would look crap....

Lastly. Some people say Blu-ray will not survive because no body is buying it. Well the way I see it. It was the exact thing with DVD. People said it would not survive. The thing about Blu-ray is, it does something nothing else can. Firstly, full HD, secondly, 3D. I will not go into 3D but basically, there is so much data needed for it, Blu-ray is the only option.

So I hope that settles it. HD and Blu-ray and 1080p are worth it.

    Flash for iPhone = X(

    Hi
Flash for iPhone is officially dead. As most of you know, the iPhone does not have flash because Apple will not let it. The other day, Adobe announced they would stop development on all flash products for iPhone which were being developed for some reason, I think Adobe was just ever hopeful. This includes this weird thing they make that converts flash applications to iPhone apps. In response to this, Apple released a letter basically saying why they think Flash sucks. You can go to the whole letter HERE but the main points are:

They say it is very closed(only available from Adobe)
------Nice one apple. Well I guess you are the experts on closed systems *cough* OSX *cough*
There are many alternatives to flash
------True True. I do like the idea of HTML5(will discuss some time later)
It is not reliable, it slows performance and there are security risks
------Ok that is 100% true but oh well it would well almost all the time
    Decreases battery life
------Also true, but Apple, come on. We all know you could have done something to fix that just like multitasking
Flash is not designed for touch
------ADOBE MADE IT FOR TOUCH FOR THE iPHONE
Some crazy thing that makes no sense.....something about Apple not wanting to talk to other companies
------Thanks Apple...... you are so friendly and accepting as always
Ok well that's about it. Now I have some possible terrible news about the HP slate so that will probably be next time.
      Bye

NEW iPHONE (I love Gizmodo) - Part 2

        Hi
FINALLY the iPhone post. Now because I am sure you have already seen everything about the iPhone 4G or whatever, I will make a quick list of new features we expect will be in the new iPhone, most likely being announced on June 7.  Here we go:)

        • Bigger battery(same size of phone but smaller components)
        • Different shape - although it is almost the same size, it is a much squarer shape
        • The screen looks to be HD, although no one can be sure
        • It seemed to have what looked like a secondary Mic for noise cancelling
        • Flash!!!!!!!! That is a camera flash not the program flash. I hope you didn't get your hopes up(By the way, the next post will be the death of flash for iPhone)
        • What looks like a better camera, but once again, no one can be sure
        • There is a weird split in the top of the case as shown below - no idea what it is for
          • by the way, the hole next to the head phone port is the noise cancelling mic
        • Also, the back of the phone seems to be a glass type material or something. Oh yay:) now we can get not only a cracked screen, but a cracked back.
        • There is a front facing camera:) yay lets all Skype grandma on my iPhone
        • Lastly, the side volume buttons have been separated.....no idea why and the SIM card slot is now microSIM(much smaller) and no the side
So that's about it:) I really like the look of it:) Multitasking. Front facing camera. HD!!:) I WANT ONE NOW
        AndrewCow
p.s. Oh.....by the way reading back at that post I realised many people would not get the whole lets Skype Grandma joke........Its an Internet nerd thing:)

        Hi
For my lack of posting I apologizes but I have been very buzy. I promise the second half of the new iPhone post will be up soon, I just do not have time to wright it at the moment. What I will post however, is, to celebrate YouTubes fifth birthday(I know, only five years??? It seems like much longer than that), a list of my favourite videos and the worlds favourite videos.
So here is my couple of favourites(Note: I count YouTube videos as original content posted on YouTube):

Now this video is not original YouTube content, but I don't care:

Now for the worlds favourites. This one is interesting because so many of them are music videos. Because of that, technically, the most watched video in YouTube history is

NEW iPHONE (I love Gizmodo) - Part 1

        Hi
You all have already probably heard this, but oh well, its just so funny. Now i'm not sure if this was a deliberate leak by Apple, but even if it was, I don't think they meant it to go this far.

You see what happened was a senior Apple software developer was seen at a bar somewhere around San Fransisco and when he left, a man(not named due to legal reasons) found what looked like an iPhone 3G/S on a stool. He called around to see if it belonged to anyone but no answer. That is when he took the phone off sleep and found many interesting things. Firstly, the senior software developers Facebook page was open. Secondly, the man realized the phone was running the new OS4. Unfortunately, he didn't think to explore many features because the next day, the phone had been deactivated using Apples MobileMe service.

It could not be restored as the firmware is device specific( the 4.0 firmware for the 3Gs will not run on it) so not much has emerged about the upcoming firmware update. The hardware though, it looks epic.

        More on that on Friday

        Steve Jobs is crazy

        Hi
My sister and I have a theory. Steve Jobs is crazy. Thats right. Completely nuts. Severe OCD to be precise. You see this in almost all of Apples products. For example the lack of any visible heating vent of any of their laptops. He was so obsessive it was to the determent of many of their products. Back to the heating vent example, the vent for the old iBooks was under the keyboard so when doing a high resource activity on the laptop, you fingers would blister and fall off. Just thank god the laptop was not metal.

Now anybody could see this, all the perfectly clean, flat surfaces in all their products show clearly they are run by a loony but nothing more than the Apple external mice. Now, you may expect me to mention something such as the lack of buttons but its a million times worse than that. Apple has gone out of their way to ensure that the batteries, which are put in side by side as expected, can be put in the same way round. Thats right, the revolutionary apple is helping us all be making sure we do not face the difficulties of rotating our hand. There is no logical reason for this, it just finalizes our theory.

Maybe Apple could produce some better products with out him, but they would be lost without the appeal he adds which gets them their OCD fanboys:)

        HP Slate

        Hi
Firstly, thanks everyone for so many people reading the last post:)
Now, supposedly, the Apple iPad is a "one of a kind device", or so apple tells us. They are blatantly lying. I would like to introduce the HP slate.  Basically it is the iPad.......except it runs not only a full version of windows 7 but has a two cameras, a USB port, a dock connector and1080p HDMI playback and output. Oh yea, and an SD card slot and it also has a 3G wireless internet, is more powerful and cheaper........

SCREW YOU iPad. Im going slate. Watch the videos below for more awesomeness. I swear I get goose bumps every time I watch it.

There is not an official release date yet but there are leaks it will be July. I can not wait!

        iPhone OS 4.0 - Part 2

So my take on iAds, changes to the photo app and all the other small changes in iPhone 4.0.

Firstly iAds. I do not have much to say. They look really cool. If you haven't seen them go HERE. Basically they are just a very advanced, interactive form of advertisement that i'm sure apple will charge a HUGE amount of money for and people will pay because the iPhone is more popular than Oxygen. They look sorta fun actually I think. Oh well, only time will tell.

NEXT other things. Changes to the photo app. FIrstly there is now facial recognition and events as well as a way to view geo tags on the phone(knows using the GPS the location of where the photo was taken). Also there is FINALLY a rotate button as well as albums, zoom ( FINALLY as well) and focus for the video camera. Before, you could focus in the video camera but only before you started recording so I presume this will be focusing while recording. Most of this stuff has been available on other phones for years so im very happy apple has finally got it, and in the classic apple manner, it looks kuch better than on any other previous phone.

Finally, other updates include a better mail system (I didn't see any thing wrong with the old one but oh well), bluetooth keyboard connectivity (means you could type on a wireless keyboard straight into your iPhone and some tweaks to the iPod functionality.

LASTLY:) the greatest feature ever to have existed is coming to the iPhone. If this had never been invented, i'm positive the world would be total chaos. YES I am talking about the technical wonder that is spell check.

And on that, to reference top gear, bombshell, I leave you
        AndrewCow

p.s. feel free to follow my blog for all your technical needs:)
p.p.s oh yea my the way the MacBook/MacBook Pro range have finally been updated with better processors, better graphics and, because of the better processor, higher battery life.

        iPhone OS 4.0 - Part 1

Okay so I missed a couple of posts but oh well. I do not really know what to say about it because everyone already knows about it but I guess I will sum it up quickly.

Firstly, multitasking. It looks very cool. Some people are complaining about how apps need to be slightly modified to use multitasking. I think people are over reacting. The only modifying is putting in a bit of code supplied by apple. This seems to be very easy to do so there is no reason every app developer should be able to do it. Also the fact they have been able to figure out how to implement it with little to no battery and performance depletion is just EPIC:). Compared to the multitasking system in a phone like the Palm Pre which is notorious for being slow and having a terrible battery.

Second thing is backgrounds. I really like this. It has been something available on jail broken iPhones for ages and I think since the iPad could do it they had to implement it in the iPhone. Also the new dock is very cool. For those of you who haven't seen it, it is just like the OSX dock(sort of a transparent trapezoid) instead of the cool looking metal grate currently in the iPhone OS. The only problem I see with backgrounds the inability to change the text colour if the app names. This means they will not be visible with some backgrounds. Jail broken  phones overcame this with apps the change the text colour but everyone knows apple would never approve those. Maybe apple will introduce some auto detect feature which changes the colour automatically but I highly doubt it.

I also really love the way they have implemented folders. Jail broken phones had folders already but they were TERRIBLE. They were very very very slow to open as well as clunky and difficult to add apps to. This way is just excellent and will my mere 100 apps I know i will definitely be using this feature.

I will finish on Wednesday. BYE

        Networking routers - Part 2

Well.....today isn't Monday but oh well Monday was iPad rant. Well i'm sure you were all riveted by the massive cliff hanger. Well you weren't but on well. YES SO WHAT I DID. What I did was dug up an old router so now I have three. I then turned the second and third router into an access point. This is like something you would see in a school or your workplace where there  is a large area to cover wirelessly or otherwise. I did this by turning off all DHCP things and UPnP on the access point routers. I then changed all the routers the the same wireless name but on different channels (1,6 and 13 i did because they are the furthest apart). Then I changed they IP address on the two extra routers to something different to the default but outside the DHCP range set on the primary router eg.

        default = 192.168.0.1
        DCHP range = 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199
        Router 1 = 192.168.0.1
        Router 2 = 192.168.0.2
        Router 3 = 192.168.0.2

Now after that you just need to plug them in. The order you do this is not important (eg. 192.168.0.2 can go into 192.168.0.3). Just make sure they both end up connected to router 1. The must important step is to connect the routers between two LAN ports not the WAN ports (port internet modem connects into on the main router).

I connected mine up like Router 1<->2<->3 but you could do 3<->1<->2. The later configuration would mean router 3 and 2 can not communicate though.

Well this has been incredibly geeky as far as past posts have gone:) Hardly anyone will understand it......that will probably because of grammar errors rather that geek levels though.

OH WELL. Next post will most likely be on the iPhone OS4 as the sneak peek is Thursday.

        Networking routers - Part 1

Okay......... This post isn't exactly about servers as such but it is about networking. You see my house has the need for a wireless router that can connect hard wired to around 10 computers. In the past I have tried things such as a network switch which didn't work because when one computer was being used as a media server, it couldn't connect to the internet. I also have used 2 routers in a way there the second router's WAN port is connected to one of the first routers LAN ports (The second router had an address of 192.168.0.2 where the first one had 192.168.0.1) . That was the best I could get, but still not great as the computers on the second router could not print from the network printer connected to the first router, nor could media be streamed between the two.

ME, being the genius I am, had an epiphany...... well Google had one for me seeing I am most definitely not a genius, and I figured out how to solve my issue. Will finish this on Monday:)

        Switching them and the trouble

        Hi
Sorry I didn't post Wednesday. As I started saying on Monday, I think I might try switching my amplifiers. The Problem is that the one up the top is more of a living room amplifier. It does not have as many sound outputs or settings. Also as the non HDMI one is more of a casual one, it does not have some sound quality enhancer settings. They both have everything we really need like iPod Dock input, tonnes of video inputs and universal remote support. The only problem is that sound. I need to figure out whether there are enough outputs which I think there are cause seriously, whats the point of having a home cinema if it has bad sound. It would be like having a Alienware computer with a 9800 graphics card. So.......oh well...

Next time I think it will be on servers.

        Hi
It is very annoying. We had a had a theater installed by some people who's names I will not mentions and they did a rather strange job. What they did is put a non HD projector in one room and put a HD Viera Plazma in the other. For the non HD projector, they have installed a Yamaha RX-V661. This AV reciver is very good:) The problem is what they put on the Plazma. They installed a RX-N600. This is a network AV reciver. This means it can connect to internet radio and stream music from your computer. What it lacks however is HDMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This means I can not connect my PS3 up in HD. My DVD player in HD. MY FOXTEL HD IN HD!!!!!!! I think I might try switching them

        Hi
Its very annoying. To upgrade to ADSL2+(well from anything to anything usually for that matter), there are all these tiny hidden costs. Firstly, the biggie. Usually installation is free, but if you get a pad provider it could cost you tonnes.

Second hidden cost is a tricky one. Well you remember in the last post how I said ADSL works through phone lines. Well, I don't think I mentioned this but I was supposed to, because its more advanced, you can still make shone calls while using the internet. For this to happen though, the people who invented ADSL made it so you need a filter ALWAYS. This means for every phone line in your house you need to attach a filter. Its not big, but they cost between $25-$40 which can really build up if you have a few phones.

You can, however, avoid this. Some times you even have to. This is when you have a Back to base alarm system, so one that has a phone line connected to it. Think, how will you put a filter on that line. Its all closed up. Well then you need a Central Line Filter. This device when installed, unlike a normal filter, splits the line in two, one for Data, one for Talk. This means you don't need any other filters but they are really expensive. I got a quote for a central line filter - > $200.

Last hidden cost - > new modem because your old cable modem will not work with ADSL. This will set you back between $60-$100. So when you  add all these costs together, they could reach up to $300. Now don't get me wrong. I love the faster internet and the much much bigger downloads, its just a bit annoying. Anyway, for me because I have to do this, I will get $300 back in only 10 months and its an 18 month contract. THATS ALMOST $250 you will save. So yea.......get ADSL2+. I highly recommend TPG.

No idea what the next post will be on but I am planning on writing next weeks this weekend so they should be more consistent then normal.

        Till next time
